EAIP – European Association of Integrative Psychotherapy

EAIP is the European umbrella association for integrative psychotherapy in Europe, known as EWAO – European Wide Accrediting Organization. The Association for Research, Counseling, and Integrative Psychotherapy holds full membership within the European Association for Integrative Psychotherapy.

EAIP Philosophy

Integrative psychotherapy embraces above all a certain attitude towards the practice of psychotherapy, affirming the importance of a unifying approach to the individual. As a result, a key element is the appropriate and effective response regarding the emotional, spiritual, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological levels of the person. The goal is to facilitate integration, so as to maximize the quality of life and functioning of the individual in the intrapsychic, interpersonal, and socio-political space, while taking into account the individual’s personal limitations and external constraints.

In this framework, it is recognized that integration is a process that requires the involvement of psychotherapists. Consequently, the personal integration of therapists is considered important. However, although focusing on the personal development of the therapist is essential, there is also a need for involvement in accumulating knowledge in the field of psychotherapy and related areas. As a result, EAIP defines as “integrative” any methodology and integrative orientation in psychotherapy that exemplifies or develops towards a coherent, principled, theoretical combination of two or more specific approaches, and/or represents a standalone model of integration. In this regard, integrative psychotherapists have an ethical obligation to dialogue with colleagues of various orientations and to be informed about advancements in the field of psychotherapy.

A central assertion of integrative psychotherapy is that no single form of psychotherapy is best or suitable for all situations. Integrative psychotherapy promotes flexibility in addressing issues, while also adhering to maintaining standards of excellence in serving clients, in supervision, and in the training process. Consequently, when integrative psychotherapists rely on various strategies, techniques, and theoretical constructs when dealing with certain situations, this integration is not done haphazardly, but in an informed manner, both at the level of clinical intuition and solid knowledge and understanding of the issues treated and the interventions applied.

As a final analysis, although integrative psychotherapy affirms the importance of certain approaches or combinations of approaches in treating various problems, the highest priority is given to those factors that are common in all psychotherapies, especially the therapeutic relationship with all its components. Regarding the therapeutic relationship, the foremost emphasis is on maintaining an attitude of respect, goodwill, honesty, and relative equality towards the client’s person, in a manner that affirms the integrity and humanity of both oneself and others. Integrative psychotherapy asserts the importance of providing a calming environment, where growth and healing can take place in an intersubjective space that has been co-created by the client and therapist.

EAP – European Association for Psychotherapy

It is the European association that coordinates all psychotherapeutic modalities, from all European countries. In other words, European associations like those mentioned above (EAIP, EAHP) fall under the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP). EAP accredits such European umbrella associations, on therapeutic modalities, called EWAO (European Wide Accrediting Organisation), as well as National Federations, such as the Romanian Federation of Psychotherapy. It is considered that national federations are what is called NAO- National Awarding Organisation. EAP maintains that psychotherapy is a distinct and separate profession from psychology or medicine and intervenes alongside the Council of Europe to introduce European legislation on psychotherapy. EAP issues the European Certificate of Psychotherapist and accredits European institutions (EAPTI) to award this certificate. Our association is the only professional association in Romania that is EAPTI.
